2020 Celebrations

Under the advisement of public health officials to limit large gatherings due to coronavirus, the Town has made the decision to postpone our Bicentennial Celebration. We understand the disappointment this may cause but feel that, given the updates of recent days, it would be unwise to go forward with the event at this time.

We hope to have a new date as the situation becomes clearer.

Celebrating Orono’s 214th Birthday and Maine’s State Bicentennial

To encourage all of Maine to participate in the celebration of its Bicentennial, the State has declared March 14th, 2020 to be “Community Dinner Day.” Cities and towns across Maine will plan their own events for the 14th, and for a single day the whole state will come together to celebrate 200 years of the way life should be.

As Maine celebrates its Bicentennial, the Town of Orono will also be celebrating its 214th birthday! So the Town and the University of Maine are working together to plan a day of celebration to coincide with both anniversaries. There are a variety of local events being planned as part of the festivities, and we anticipate a fun day for all involved.

You’ll find a current schedule of events below, with more still to come as we get closer to March. Be sure to watch this page for new events and updates!

3:00 - 4:00 PM:    Maine Author Mac Smith - “Mainers On The Titanic” (Council Chambers)

4:00 - 6:00 PM:    Taste of Orono (Stone Manor), Orono Historical Society Open House (Stone Manor), Oral History Project (Stone Manor)

6:00 - 8:30 PM:    Asa Adams PTO Family Dance (Keith Anderson Community House)

2020 Bicentennial Celebration Events – March 14th 2020

Taste of Orono

Taste of Orono highlights our town’s exceptional culinary and brewing scene. Town restaurants and breweries are invited to highlight their favorite menu items during a showcase held at The Stone Manor on Main Street.

Orono Historical Society Exhibit

Don’t miss your change to see some items from the Orono Historical Society’s vast collection. The Orono Historical Society collects important artifacts that tell the story of Orono from its earliest days. The group will display some of these rare items during the Taste of Orono event.

Downtown fireworks display at 7:30PM

Have an idea for another way to celebrate?

Groups of residents, civic and community clubs and organizations, as well as area businesses are encouraged to create their own events and bring them to the town to be included in the celebration. We encourage ideas that focus on Orono’s past as well as those that showcase and present its future.

Have an idea but can’t make it work for March 14th? Events to commemorate Maine’s bicentennial are happening throughout 2020, and we would love you to help us celebrate all year long!

Those interested in submitting their team plans should contact Mitch Stone, Director of Parks and Recreation for Orono, at mstone@orono.org or by calling (207) 866-2556.
