Fire Department
Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Orono Fire Department to protect the community from all hazards through dedicated professionalism.
The meaning of our statement:
Community – Refers to the residents, visitors, businesses, mutual aid partners, and others that rely on us to provide service in their time of need.
All Hazards - Long gone are the days of firefighters just responding to fires. Modern fire services must be ready to intervene when natural, technological, or medical calamities occur placing lives, the environment, or property in danger.
Dedication – We pledge to continue to hone our craft through education and experience ensuring that we are able to meet the needs of the community with competence and confidence. We will look to excel in every area possible watching for emerging risks that may pose future hazards.
Human Dignity Statement
Mission Statement
It is the mission of the Orono Fire Department to protect the community from all hazards through dedicated professionalism manifested by competence, skill, and how we conduct ourselves.
In the Public
We are proactive in our efforts to ensure human dignity by treating all individuals fairly and equally to the best of our professional ability. We do not discriminate based on race, color, spirituality, gender, age, national origin, ancestry, socio-economic backgrounds, sexual orientation, gender expression, gender identity, ethnicity, marital status, disability, or any legally protected characteristic. We also recognize that passively allowing discrimination or unequal treatment to exist within our organization weakens our ability to respond to our varied customer bases, lessens our image in their eyes, and we will report any discriminatory or inequal conduct to the Orono Fire Chief.
In the Workplace
It is vital to maintain an organization where each of us is morally committed to ensuring equality of opportunity and inclusivity for every individual. We all assume personal responsibility for assuring that this culture is fostered and transcends throughout the organization. We practice inclusive behaviors and educate others about the need for, and benefits of, inclusive actions while carrying out our mission. We utilize hiring practices that encourage minority applicants, ensuring that our hiring process is neither exclusive of any group or discriminatory.
How We Communicate
The words we speak and write play a significant role in creating the reality of an inclusive work environment. With an increasingly diverse global society, the Orono Fire Department recognizes the need for inclusive language in written fire department policies and communications, as well as in daily fire department verbal communications.
Breaches of Our Responsibility
The Orono Fire Department has zero tolerance for acts of deliberate or intentional discrimination. Reported or suspected breaches of our responsibility, regardless of their origin, will be investigated by the Fire Chief and corrective action made as appropriate.
