Town of Orono Landfill Rules
The landfill standard hours of operation are every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm
The Town of Orono operates and maintains a Maine DEP licensed Construction Demolition and Debris (CDD) Landfill located at 1 Putnam Road, Orono ME 04473, at the end of Taylor Road, which is located off Forest Avenue in Orono.
This disposal site is for wastes generated within the Town of Orono only.
Residents must present - at the time of disposal - a Town of Orono Landfill Permit (window sticker), which costs $25 and is available for purchase online at this link. **
** Permits purchased online will be mailed to you. In the interim, a printout or screenshot of your permit purchase may be presented for entry at the landfill.
You may also visit the Town Office to purchase a Landfill Permit.
PLEASE NOTE: No permits are available for purchase at the landfill.
How it Works:
Town residents may dispose of certain types of waste generated in Orono at the Town Landfill by purchasing an annual Resident Landfill Permit ("window sticker") for $25.
With an annual Resident Landfill Permit ("window sticker"), you are free to dump the following:
scrap metal, non-freon-containing white goods (ovens, microwaves), leaves and brush, clothing, towels, bedding, footwear
Cubic Yard Tickets
At an additional per-cubic-yard cost, other types of waste are also accepted. When you purchase an annual Resident Landfill Permit ("window sticker"), you receive two (2) free Cubic Yard Tickets ("cubic permit") for these other types of waste. Beyond the two (2) free tickets, additional Cubic Yard Tickets ("cubic permit") are $25 each and may be purchased at the same link as the permit.
Waste that may be dumped with a Resident Landfill Permit ("window sticker") and a Cubic Yard Ticket ("cubic permit") (minimum fee of one cubic yard):
tires (4 tires = 1 cubic yard), couches and other furniture (1 couch = 1 cubic yard), mattresses (1 mattress = 1 cubic yard), freon-containing white goods (1 refrigerator, freezer, dehumidifier, A/C unit, or other item = 1 cubic yard), construction and demolition debris (per cubic yard)

No funds are accepted at the landfill. Online purchases will be processed by the Town and Resident Permits & Cubic Yard Tickets will be mailed to you.

When you purchase a Resident Landfill Permit, you will receive two (2) free Resident Cubic Yard Tickets,
to be used anytime the landfill is open
Resident permit window stickers purchased now will expire at the end of 2023.
2022 Stickers will be available starting July 1st, 2023 and will expire Dec 31, 2024

Landfill Schedule
The landfill standard hours of operation are every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. The landfill is available to be opened on unscheduled days, by appointment only, for an additional charge. Appointments can be made by contacting Rob Yerxa or Mike Smart Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 3:30pm at 866-5062. Appointments will be taken at the discretion of the Public Works Department contingent on staffing levels and weather considerations.
About the Landfill

Residents must present a Town of Orono Landfill Permit at the time of disposal. Permits are available to be purchased at the Town Office during regular business hours. No permits are available for purchase at the landfill.
Waste that will not be accepted at Landfill:
- Batteries
- Fluorescent Lighting Tubes
- Hazardous Materials
- Auto engines or car bodies
- Recycling or household trash - see our curbside collection program
- Oils, pesticides, paints, or other liquids
NO CUBIC-YARD TICKET WEEKEND - May 12th, 13th and 14th from 8:00am to 4:00pm
Annual access permits must be purchased from the Town Office prior to using the landfill at a cost of $25 (residential) or $250 (commercial). New permits are valid through December 31, 2023 and come with two disposal tickets (with a total value of $50/residential or $100/commercial use).
When you purchase an annual Resident Landfill Permit ("window sticker"), you receive two (2) free Cubic Yard Tickets ("cubic permit") for types of waste other than scrap metal, non-freon-containing white goods (ovens, microwaves), leaves and brush, clothing, towels, bedding, footwear.
Beyond the two (2) free tickets, additional Cubic Yard Tickets ("cubic permit") are $25 each EXCEPT ON NO TICKET WEEKENDS!
