Welcome to the website of the Orono Police Department. We hope that the information contained in these pages will provide a better understanding of our mission and the services that we provide.
The Orono Police Department is a progressive, full service law enforcement agency serving a community of approximately 11,350 residents. The Town of Orono is also home to the flagship campus of the University of Maine, which has an enrollment of approximately 12,000 students. We are a community-oriented policing agency, focusing on community partnerships and problem -solving in order to improve the quality of life of all people within Orono.

The Orono Police Department is staffed with 15 full time police officers. The Administration Division is comprised of the Director of Public Safety, Chief of Police, the Captain and an Administrative Assistant. The Director of Public Safety is responsible for general oversight, the Chief and Captain are responsible for the daily management and supervision of the department while the Administrative Assistant provides secretarial, record keeping and clerical support.
The Patrol Division is staffed with 3 Sergeants and 7 Patrol Officers. Our department currently has one Detective who is responsible for investigating serious crimes and incidents requiring specialized investigation skills.
The Community Policing Division is staffed with a Director of Community Policing and a shared Patrol Officer. This division is responsible for leading the community policing strategy of the Orono Police Department (Community Relationships & Partnerships, Collaboration, Problem-Solving), in particular:
- Non-emergency Community Conflict Resolution
- Community Events
- PD/Town Liaison with Various Local & Community Groups
- School-based Services (School Resource Officer)
- Community Education & Outreach
