Building permits are required for all new construction, including homes, garages and additions to existing structures (decks, porches, etc.). Permits are also required for certain structural repairs, for structural alterations such as the addition of doors or windows, and for demolition work.
Building permits are required for the construction or placement of sheds of any size. No building permits are required for fences under 6 feet in height, for the re-shingling of roofs, for interior or exterior painting, for replacement of sheetrock, or for cosmetic changes to structures including new siding.
Homeowners may take out building permits themselves or have their contractors do it for them. Plans need to be submitted to the Code Enforcement Office for review before any work can begin. If you are unsure if you need a permit, please check with us before proceeding.
