Eliminating CSO Events in Orono
Annually, the Town must report its Combined Sewer Overflows (CSO) events. The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and Maine Department of Environmental Protection establish these requirements.
CSO events are caused when extraneous water enters the Town’s sanitary sewer system from sump pumps, basement drains, roof drains, foundation drains, old brick manholes and cracked underground pipe during seasonal high water and rain events. The extraneous water, considered to be clean, combines with sanitary sewage and causes the Orono treatment plant to exceed its capacity and creates an overflow of raw sewage to the Penobscot River. One sump pump running continuously for 12 hours might pump as much as 50,000 gallons of water. This is equivalent to the flow of sewage normally generated by 250 residences.
Orono’s Sewer Ordinance prohibits the connection of floor drains, roof drains, sump pumps and foundation drains. Help eliminate CSOs in Orono. If your property has any of these sources of extraneous water, they must be disconnected. Any claim for damage by a sewer backup will not be honored if it’s a result of a prohibited connection.
For assistance call the WPCF at 866-5069. The Town will work cooperatively with anyone wishing to eliminate extraneous water.
