Orono has joined with other towns in a statewide recycling effort to reduce waste in landfills and to reduce the demand on our valuable natural resources. You can find the recycling collection schedule in our on-line recycling dates. A listing of acceptable items for Trash Pickup is at the bottom of this page. We ask that you help our effort by following these guidelines: Curbside Recyling Schedule

  1. Please, separate recyclables in your bin by placing each type in a separate bag, ie, a bag for tin cans, glass, # 2 plastic, and newspaper.
  2. Please crush plastic milk containers. Flatter containers take up less space in the vehicle.
  3. Please, no "deposit" containers. Donate them to a Scout group or the local Sports Booster club.


Group A - Clear and Colored Glass Food and Beverage Bottles and Jars
  • Rinse well to remove food residue.
  • Remove tops and metal or plastic rings and discard
  • Labels do not need to be removed.
  • Collect glass mixed in a brown paper bag in your bin.
DO NOT recycle light bulbs, Plate glass, drinking glasses, auto glass, china, mirrors or ceramics.

Group B - Tin and Aluminum Cans
  • Rinse well to remove food residue.
  • Labels do not need to be removed.
  • Crushing/Flattening is not necessary.
  • Collect cans in a brown paper bag in your bin.
DO NOT recycle scrap metal, aerosol or paint cans, auto product cans, aluminum plates, pie tins, or tin foil.

Group C - #2 Plastic Bottles (HDPE) Clear and Colored Narrow Neck Bottles
  • Clear & colored #2 Plastic (HDPE), such as milk, water and detergent.
  • Remove lids/rings, rinse to remove residue.
  • Labels do not need to be removed.
  • Crush or flatten, collect mixed plastic bottles in a brown bag in your bin.

    MUST BE CRUSHED AS MUCH AS POSSIBLE
NO wide mouth #2 plastics such as margarine or yogurt containers.
NO shampoo bottles, motor oil or anti-freeze containers.


Group D - Waxless Corrugated Cardboard
  • Flattened waxless cardboard only
  • Cut large boxes into 2 ft X 3 ft pieces.
  • Stack on top of your bin for collection.

NO pizza boxes, cereal boxes or shoe boxes.
DO NOT tie with string. NO yellowish, box board.


Group E - "News Group" Mixed Papers
  • Includes newspaper, newsprint inserts, glossy flyers, catalogs, magazines and telephone books.
  • Collect these in a paper bag in your bin.
  • It is important to keep this material dry. Please cover!
NO office paper, envelopes, or plain paper contents of junk mail.

OFFICE PAPER RECYCLING

The Town Office on Main Street has a drop off container for recycling high grade office paper.

Please use the following guidelines:

OFFICE PAPER: mixed, dry & clean; ALL ledger, letterhead, writing, copier, computer, bond, colored, fax, index cards, adding machine tape, plain paper contents only of junk mail.

NO ENVELOPES AT ALL
NO POST- IT NOTES OR SELF STICK LABELS
NO GLOSSY PAPER AT ALL

ACCEPTABLE ITEMS FOR TRASH
  1. Garbage
  2. Cold ashes
  3. Metal, plastic, glass containers*
  4. Rags, clothing and other textiles
  5. Broken kitchenware
  6. Small wooden furniture
  7. Wooden doors, crates
  8. Cardboard boxes*
  9. Newsprint, magazines, phone books and office paper*
  10. Tires (two per household per week)
    * These items should be recycled curbside or at the depot.

    UNACCEPTABLE ITEMS FOR TRASH
    1. Leaves & brush, yard waste
    2. Mattresses
    3. Demolition debris
    4. Tires with rims
