Training
It is policy of the Orono Police Department to provide its officers with timely, complete and relevant training, in order that all police services can be provided with the highest degree of efficiency, effectiveness, and professionalism.
LeadershipCommand staff and supervisors attend or have attended training conducted by the International Association of Chiefs of Police, the Maine Chiefs of Police, the FBI National Academy, the FBI’s Law Enforcement Executive Leadership Association, the Southern Police Institute, the Northeast Counterdrug Training Center, the Institute of Police Technology and Management, and the Southern Maine Community College.

Officers have attended the Incident Response to Terrorist Bombings school at New Mexico Tech, and have received training in Weapons of Mass Destruction Response through Louisiana State University.
School ViolenceClasses attended include Controlling and Responding to School Violence and Police Interactions with Youth
DrugsSeveral officers have attended the 40-hour training conducted by the Multi-jurisdictional Counterdrug Task Force on patrol techniques, drug identification, and legal issues.

2 Officers have completed the 2-week Fire/Arson Investigation course at the National Fire Academy in Maryland.
FirearmsAll department members receive training each year in firearms tactics. Instructors and officers have attended additional training through the Maine Criminal Justice Academy, Action Target, SigArms Academy, the Federal Law Enforcement Training Center, and LAPD SWAT.
MiscellaneousAll officers complete MCJA mandatory training topics each year. The topics vary from year to year but include: Elder Abuse and Neglect, Terrorism prevention, New Law Updates, Hazardous Materials, Drug and Alcohol issues, Constitutional law, Homelessness, and many others.
