Municipal Election Nomination Papers Available

Nomination papers will be available after December 19th at the town office for the March 13, 2012 Municipal Election.  The deadline for filing papers is on or before 4:30 p.m. Friday, January 27, 2012.   At least 25, but no more than 100 signatures of Orono voters are required to have a name placed on the ballot.

There are three 3-year terms available on Town Council and two 3-year terms and one 2-year term available on the Orono RSU#26 Board.

4-6pm Selling raffle tickets to be used for drawings in some of the local shops. Participating shops - Judy's Stampin & Scrapin, Fiberphilia,Rose Bike Shop, Fire Sign, DeGrasse Jewerly, Metropolitian Soul and Ampersand/The Store.

4:30-5 pm  OHS Chorus entertains the crowd with Holiday carols

Orono Parks and Recreation is sponsoring Watercolor for Kids taught by Janice

Hambelton.  Janice has been painting for many years and is an active participant

in the Bangor Sidewalk Art Festival.  Her art work is on display in the Tredwell

Building as well as on her website:   wwwdreamsbyjanice.com.

Landfill Closed November 23rd

Due to winter weather and staffing issues associated with it, the Orono Landfill will be closed on November 23, 2011.  Regular hours will resume Saturday, November 26, 2011.  Thank you for your cooperation.  We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause.

Weekend Fire Caused by Hair Dryer

The State Fire Marshal’s Office has determined that a weekend fire at the Stillwater Village apartment complex was accidental and caused by a hair dryer. The fire was reported around 6 p.m. Saturday night. Occupants were alerted to the fire when the fire alarm system activated. The properly working fire doors throughout the building kept most of the smoke out of the hallways, allowing tenants to safely exit the building. No tenants were injured but two firefighters suffered minor injuries.

Reduce the Risk of Holiday Cooking Fires

Frying a turkey can be a different way to enjoy the traditional Thanksgiving meal, but it is important to do it safely. Frying anything creates the risk of hot oil burns and fires. According to the National Fire Protection Association, in 2006 and 2007 there were over 1400 cooking fires nationwide on Thanksgiving Day. This is three times more than the daily national average.

Boil Water Order for Colburn Drive and Marsh Lane

The Town has been advised by the Orono-Veazie Water District that due to construction related activity, a Boil Water Order has been issued for those residents on Colburn Drive and Marsh Lane in Orono.  This is a safety precaution and affects only those living on Colburn Drive and Marsh Lane.  Residents will be advised when the order has been lifted.

Register now for Rec Basketball !!

Orono Parks and Recreation is currently accepting registrations for the Rec Basketball Program designed for kindergarten through 5th grade. The Program will emphasize skills, basketball knowledge and team play. The k-1st grade program is primarily instructional and meets only on Saturdays from 8:30-9:30 am while the 2nd-3rd grade and 4th-5th will be placed on boys and girls teams to practice and play in games with teams from Veazie Rec and Bangor Parks and Recreation.
