"Student Homes" Moratorium Being Studied

The draft Update of the Comprehensive Plan identified the need for a better balance between student rentals and continued home ownership opportunities in established neighborhoods. It recommended defining “student homes” as a specific type of land use and limiting their number in zoning districts primarily designed for single- and two-family homes.

Noise Ordinance Changes Proposed

The Town’s Noise Ordinance has not been updated for a number of years.  During that time certain zoning districts have changed.  The Noise Ordinance needs to be aligned with these changes. 

Key proposed changes include setting sound pressure levels for zoning districts that have been newly created or changed during the past decade; using an hourly averaging approach similar to that used by Maine Department of Environmental Protection; and prescribing certain measurement procedures.

Black Bear Shuttle: new Saturday Schedule

The numbers are in for the Black Bear Orono Express’s 2013-2014 Academic Year: the shuttle carried just over 60,000 passengers between September and May.  Ridership has grown steadily since the shuttle service began in the 2009-2010 school year. 

One period during the week, however, has always been slow – the shuttle has carried few riders during Saturday evening hours (5 pm to 10 pm).  Therefore, the service for that time slot has ended.  Instead, a second bus will be added to the...
