The landfill, located on Taylor Road off Outer Forest Avenue, will be open FREE OF CHARGE to Orono residents on May 17, 18 and 19, 2019, from 8am-4pm each day. Proof of residency or property ownership is required. Acceptable items include: - Household and furniture items. (NO TVs, monitors, batteries, fluorescent tubes or computers. NO hazardous materials or universal waste.) - Boards, debris, metal (items must be separated at the landfill) - Non-freon white goods (i.e. stoves, microwaves, cabinets) The only charge for residents during these events is the $20/item fee for items containing freon (i.e. refrigerators, freezers, dehumidifiers and air conditioners) which must be obtained from the Town Office prior to drop-off at the landfill. No tires, auto engines or car bodies can be dropped off. However, up to two tires (without rims) can be placed curbside with your weekly trash pickup.

About the Landfill

The Town of Orono operates and maintains a Maine DEP licensed Construction Demolition and Debris (CDD) Landfill. The CDD Landfill is located at Putnam Road, at the end of Taylor Road, which is located off Forest Avenue in Orono. This disposal site is for wastes generated within the Town of Orono only.

Residents must present a Town of Orono Landfill Permit at the time of disposal. Permits are available to be purchased at the Town Office during regular business hours. No permits are available for purchase at the landfill.

Hours of Operation

During the months of December 2018 through March 2019, the Town of Orono Landfill Construction Demolition Debris (located on Putnam Road) will be open to permit holders on Saturdays from 8:00am to 4:00pm on the following dates: December 1st, 15th, 29th, January 12th, 26th, February 9th, 23rd, March 9th, 23rd. 

The landfill will also be available to permit holders on Wednesdays by appointment only at no additional charge. Appointments can be made by contacting Rob Yerxa or Mike Smart Monday through Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 3:30pm at 866-5062. Appointments will be taken at the discretion of the Public Works Department contingent on staffing levels and weather considerations.
Beginning April 3, 2019, the landfill will return to the standard hours of operation — every Wednesday and Saturday from 8:00am to 4:00pm. As always, the landfill is available to be opened on unscheduled days, by appointment only, for an additional charge.

Only the following wastes generated within the municipal boundaries of Orono will be accepted at the disposal site:
  • Boards, which may be burned
  • Demolition debris including earth, plaster, mortar, bricks, building blocks, roofing materials, drywall, and any similar materials.
  • White goods including discarded washers, dryers, and stoves.
  • Freon "type" containing appliances including refrigerators, freezers, air conditioners, etc., can be disposed of for an additional fee of $20 per appliance.
  • Auto body parts and other heavy metal materials.
  • Bulky materials such as mattresses, old furniture, and carpet.
Unacceptable Wastes
  • Refuse, household trash, garbage, clothing, fabric
  • Tires (can be placed curbside with household trash - limit 2 per week, without rims)
  • Branches leaves, trees, stumps, roots, and limbs
  • Motor vehicles; junk vehicles
  • Propane tanks
  • Batteries
  • Corrugated cardboard
  • Five-gallon or larger drum containers, unless one end is open and the drums and/or containers are clean
  • Monitors, PCs, or TVs
